Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starter Noise on Craftsman 18 HP, craftsman 917, appropriate boxes

Question
Hi John, Thanks to the info on electrical.  I now have the engine running and it runs really well.  However, the starter make a screeching noise like it really needs something lubricated.

Craftsman 917.254860 B&S 18hp Model 422707, Type 125601.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ken

Answer
Hi Again Ken:

I am Glad I was Able to Assist you on the Electrical Problem. You are Very Welcome. Usually a Screeching from the Starter is Due to; 1- A Worn/Bad Flywheel, 2- Worn Bushings in the Starter, 3- A Bad Starter Drive Assembly. Once the Screeching Starts, Usually it is too Late for Lubrication. I Suggest you Replace the Starter Drive Assembly or the Complete Starter. I Usually Replace the Complete Starter or Completely Rebuild the Starter. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Unit at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (422707) and Type Numbers (1256) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. The Starter Breakdown is on Page 12 of 19. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
