Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman lawn tractor, twin cylinder engines, craftsman lawn tractor

Question
I have a Craftsman LT 2000 with a 17.5 hp engine.  I just replaced the battery and the engine will turn about 3/4 and then struggle for a 1/4 turn.  It will eventually gain enough momentum to start and run fine.  I checked the battery and the voltage is good and I have cleaned and inspected all electrical connections.  I took the spark plug out and the engine turned freely.  I have also checked the operator presence switch and it is fine.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Vince:

1- This has Become a Common Problem with the OHV Engines. You need to Reset the Valve Clearance. The Compression Release is Not Operating Properly and Resetting the Valve Clearance will Correct this Problem. **I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) on the Compression Stroke When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .007in - .009in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. Be Sure the Piston is at TDC on the Compression Stroke.**  2- If the Resetting the Valve Clearance Does Not Correct the Problem, then Check the Flywheel Key for Damage. 3- the Last Item to Check will be the Starter. Have the Starter Load Tested to Check for Dragging that is Caused by Bad Bushings in the Starter. Most Times it is the Valve Clearance that is the Cause of the Problem you Described. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
