Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman riding mower will not start (ignition), switch jumper, jumper wire

Question
Hello,

I have a Craftsman riding mower model # 917-255910.  I recently had to replace the alternator located behind the flywheel.  I was able to get it installed and the tractor reassembled.  I had to jump the tractor as a result of the alternator.  I am now unable to start the mower with the key start.  It worked fine prior to the repair which leads me to believe I am missing something.  I was able to start the mower off of the starter cable, but I had to shut it down with the choke.  When I turn the key to start, nothing happens.  I have noticed that when the key is in the "ON" position if I turn the electric mower deck switch I hear a click but if the key is in the "OFF" position I hear nothing.  This leads me to believe the ignition is working as far as turning the power on and off for the mower deck anyway.  When I reassembled the mower the only wires I had were two grounds and a lead for the alternator.  I did confirm the alternator is now charging when running.  As the mowing season gets closer I really need some help.  Any input will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Answer
Hello David:

From your Description it Sounds like a Safety Switch Problem. I Suggest you Check the Clutch and Blade Safety Switches.**PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY. I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed. Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch Jumper from Same Color Wire to Same Color Wire). Check the Clutch/Break and the Blade/PTO Safety Switches First. Check the Seat Safety Last. Usually the Seat Safety is Not in the System for Starting the Engine. Just to Ensure Someone is in the Seat when Engaging the Transaxle and/or Blades.** To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. Select the Electrical File. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
