Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Over Revved B& S, overrev, pushrods

Question
We have a greenfield mower and it over revved and stopped.  We had it repaired and they said the givernor spring was no good and thats why it over revved and they replaced 3 pushrods.  I got it back and mowed for 15 minutes and it backfired and stopped and wouldn't start.  They say it is not worth repairing and that the first overrev has probably done damage that cant be seen to the block.  Is that likely or did they just not repair it properly?

Answer
Hello Sue:

Has Anyone Checked the Flywheel Key? Does the Engine Turn Smoothly with the Spark Plug/s Removed? No Grinding or Binding? A Simple Over Rev Does Not Usually do Damage Unless it is Held at the Over Rev for a Long Period. From your Description, If the Engine was Operating Properly After the Push Tubes and Governor Spring were Replaced, then I Suggest you Check the Flywheel Key for Damage and Replace it if Required. It Sounds Like the Flywheel Key is Damaged. This Could have Occurred when the Engine Over Revved was Not Checked at the Shop. Most Shops Do Not Check the Flywheel Key for an Over Rev Problem Like yours. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
