Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & stratton 130902 0439-01, briggs and stratton, briggs stratton

Question
G'Day John,
I am from Sydney Australia and I have 1973 ride-on lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton model 130902 0439-01 that has been in my dad's garage for many years as it has not being working. I replaced the KEY in the flywheel (as it was broken) and the engine fired up, but the motor is really hard to start and when it runs it is really rough. The valve clearances is 0.005" for the inlet valve and 0.025" for the exhaust valve and the point clearance 0.018".....could you please confirm if these clearances are correct. Also, the carbi sits on top of the petrol tank and i have made up a new gasted (the one between the carbi and the petrol tank) as the old one was broken, but it still leaks petrol and it feel like air is leaking into the carbi and this could also be causing problems.

Could you please help me with some advice, and perhaps what i should do is purchase a service manual for this model engine from the USA (not available in Australia).

Regards

Alfonso Najera

Answer
Hello Alfonso:

The Valve Clearances are: Intake .005in - .007in and Exhaust .009in - .011in. The Point Set is Gapped to .020in. The .018in Should be Ok for the Point Set Gap. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File # 13. Then Select the Folder # 130900. You can Purchase Parts and a Manual for this Engine from this Site. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
