Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower - Hydrostatic transmission belt, microscopic pores, loading ramps

Question
Eric,
While changing the oil in my Lawntrator, I spilled oil on my hydrostatic transmission belt. The belt now spins when I put it in a bind - going up hill, or loading on loading ramps on my truck (my lawn mower just stops whil the belt spins). Is there a way to remove the oil from the belt? Suggestions have ranged from spraying it with degreaser while its running to cleaning it with brake parts cleaner then spraying belt conditioner on it; your other answers are always on the mark, so I have tried nothing, and won't until I hear your thoughts on this problem.

Thanks,
Dave

Answer
It is extramely difficult to remove oil or grease from belts.  The oil seems to penetrate the microscopic pores of the belt.

Brakleen is a very good degreaser.  It will not hurt to try brakleen but the best solution would be to replace the belt.

If you choose to replace the belt ensure you clean the pulleys with degreaser or brakleen.

As for belt dressing, I have had it cause more harm than good.  Just my experience but belt dressing is cheap and may be worth a shot since hydro belts are always under tension.

Let me know if this helps.
Eric
