Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ignition, john deere lx279, starter solenoid

Question
john deere lx279 when starting you have to hold the key in the crank position for several seconds for it to start to crank. when released the starter will not disengage immediately it also takes a few seconds. is this a faulty ignition switch or something else???

Answer
Hello Tim:

This is Usually the Starter Solenoid. Sometimes it can be the Ign Switch. On this Model JD there is an Ign Control Module that is a Part of the Ign Switch. I Suggest you Check the Solenoid for Sticking. If the Solenoid Function Properly During the Test, then the Ign Control Module (Ign Switch) is Causing the Problem. To Test the Starter Solenoid; Using the Red Lead of a Jumper Cable Set, Attach One End to the Positive Post of the Battery. Take the Other End of the Red Lead and Firmly Touch the Small Post at the Base of the Solenoid that has the Ign Wire Attached to it. If the Starter Turns Promptly, and Does Not Hesitate to Operate, then the Ign Control Module of the Ign Switch is Bad. Replace the Ign Switch. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (LX279) and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Wiring Harness File. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
