Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine swap, 6 digits, 4 digits

Question
I change out a 12HP Briggs & Strattion on a Murry riding mower , purchased around 1991 for a B&S 280H07-OO36E1 14.5 purchased 02/08. the 12HP had two wires. I got the DC Only wire connected, I know I need to send voltage to the carb, solenoid. The old engine had only two wires, DC only (red) and a black wire by the throttle control that had a yellow from the mower.what do the yellow wire connect to now.

Answer
Hello Calvin:

The 12 HP had a Charging Wire and a Shut Off Wire. The Shut Off Wire (black on the engine) Goes to the Coil/Ign Module. On the 14.5 HP you have 3 Wires. 2 are Charging and 1 is the Engine Shut Off Wire. On the Old Engine the Black Wire to the Throttle Bracket is the Shut Off Wire and if you Check the Yellow Wire, you should find that it is Grounded when the Ign Switch is in the Off Position Only. This Grounds the Coil/Ign Module/Magneto so the Plug Stops Firing. You can Wire the Carburetor Solenoid to the Ign Switch so the Solenoid has Current Only when the Ign Switch is in the Run Position. I am Assuming that you have 2 Wires from the Stator/Alternator and 1 from the Coil/Ign Module/Magneto. Remember that 1 of the Charging Wires is a Low Voltage Wire that Operates the Lights and the Other is a High Voltage Wire for Charging the Battery. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: 280H07-0036. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
