Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Wheel Horse mower with Kohler K341 16 hp engine, electronic ignition modules, head gaskets

Question
The kohler engine starts right up and the mower cuts grass and the engine runs fine for about 15 minutes, then it seems that the engine looses power (will not turn the mower blades fast enough to cut grass) then the engine knocks and will stop running unless I back off on the throttle. After it knocks and stops, the engine will not run properly and the mower does not have power to turn the blades fast enough until given a rest of an hour or so.  Can you help troubleshoot my problem?  Thank you.

Answer
I would start by checking the ignition system.  Those old coils have a tendancy to break down and stop working.  It may be worth the money to replace the ignition coil.  In addition, you can purchase electronic ignition modules to get rid of the points.

A less expensive option is to replace the points and condeser and see if this helps the problem. Other problems with the older Kohlers are valve wear, leaky head gaskets and wore carburetors.  Check the carburetor butterfly shafts for play.  The soft brass shafts wear over time causing air leaks and loss of power.

To recap, check the points, condenser, ignition coil and carb.
Has the engine ever had a major tune-up at a shop?  If the tractor is in good shape I would highly recommend fixing the engine because those tractors are really durable and becoming very rare.

Let me know what you find.
