Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Stihl 015 chainsaw squeal at idle and running, stihl dealer, end play

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I read your reply to this same question that somebody else had on Feb. 1st and your answer said to check the starter recoil and flywheel pawls. I have 2 of these saws doing the same thing and I have sprayed the recoil with penetrating fluid and it seems ok and quiet with it removed from the saw. I also checked the flywheel pawls and they are free and I also lubed them. The noise comes and goes depending on if I tilt the saw to the side with the recoil facing up it is quiet and it really squeals if I tip the saw sideways with the recoil downward. I was wondering if you had any other ideas. I am running out of them myself.

Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello Brian:

How Much End Play is there in the Crankshaft (How Much Does the Crankshaft Move when Pulling and Pushing on the Flywheel)? How Much Play is in the Starter Pulley? If you Do Not Understand the Questions, let me know and I will Try to Ask Another Way. Thanks.

QUESTION: I checked the end play and there appears to be about .034" in the crank and maybe .024" in the recoil. I cannot see anyplace that it is rubbing. I stopped into the stihl dealer and asked what the spec is and he told me "less than an 1/8 inch". (I think there must need to be a tighter tolerance than that, but that is what I was told). If I have too much end play what are my options to correct this, or is it not repairable?

Answer
Hello Again Brian:

That Does Seem a Bit Much for End Play. I have a Contact at Stihl, so I will Contact him Today and Follow up to you Later Today (2/21/08). I Seem to Remember the End Play Being .010in to .015in but I Want to be Sure. If the End Play is Too Much, you would be Better Served Purchasing a New Saw. The Cost to Replace Either the Engine Base or the Crankshaft (Depending on which is Worn) is More Expensive than Purchasing a New Saw. Thanks.
