Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small engine questions, mixture adjustments, tecumseh engines

Question
HI, I'd like to get idle & WOT rpm settings & quick governor set-ups for my two Tecumseh engines.  Both have had their carbs replaced.  (1st) engine is an HS50-67181C. It's in a old 1980ish Craftsman snowblower.  Sear's engine part# is 143.696082, SER 918 OB.  It surges pretty bad right now at mid to high throttle settings and pops alot while decelerating, but idles fine.  The new carb (#640084B) has no mixture adjustments while the original did (#632107).  The (2nd) engine is a TVS840 8023D 2 stroke 5hp engine in a Snapper 21" cut lawnmower.  The new carb is #632755, the old one is 632434.  It runs ok at WOT, but doesn't idle that great.  Any help you can give me is appreciated.

Answer
Hello Joe:

First, Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf  . For Idle Speeds I Suggest you Set the Idle to Suit the Application. Engines have a Personality. Turn the Idle Down Until the Engine Starts to Stall, then Turn Back 1/2 Turn. If the Idle Sounds a Little Low then Increase Slightly Until you have the Idle Speed you Feel Comfitable with. The Max RPMs for the HS50 I Suggest is 3800rpms. On the 2 Cycle Engine the Idle Problem can be Caused by a Misgapped Plug, a Restricted Exhaust Port or Muffler or a Leak in the Carburetor Gasket. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. You can View a Snapper Breakdown/IPL at this Site Addy, http://www.emerichsales.com/parts-browse.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Now Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Snapper). Then Enter the Model Numbers. Now Double Click on your Model. To View a Sears Breakdown of this Unit at this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
