Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): NEW Ariens Backfiring, spec numbers, water in the fuel

Question
Hi,
I bought an Ariens 11528DLE 3 years ago and used it about 10 times (damn global warming...). I nevertheless maintain it per the owners manual (oil changes, lubes...). Been getting lots of snow this winter and she's been great, I used it 2 days ago and it cleared out 4 driveways like a charm, put it away in my closed garage after clearing the packed snow out of the impeller and ejectors.
I went to start it last night and it sputtered and backfired, belching black smoke. Not enough power to keep the headlight on, let alone provide motion or turn the augers.
I suspected water in the fuel, so I removed the petcock and drained the tank and ran the engine until it starved the rest. I bought new 91 octane fuel with no additives and tried again. Same result. the local Ariens dealer suspects the presence of Ethanol in the fuel, but the fuel I bought as no ethanol in it...so says the refiner.
What can go so wrong so fast?
I was thinking fouled plug now...but how can that happen over night so such a low use machine?
Help!

Answer
Hello Padraic:

Is the Starter Turning the Engine Properly? Does the Engine Turn 3/4 of a Turn then Slow/Stop and Then Turn Again? It May be the Valves Require Adjustment or the Carburetor May have Picked Up Trash. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Thanks.
