Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): wiring, hp briggs, battery cables

Question
QUESTION: i just recently tried to install a ignition switch along with a solnoid.I have a 20 hp briggs vanguard.i think the model number is 350400.i am so confused on the location of the wires coming from the ignition switch.i tried my best to put them in the right place but don't know if i did it right.the colors of the wires are red, orange, yellow, brown, black,(and white in whitch i was told to disreguard because there is no shut off wire at the carb).can you possibly tell me what color wire goes where, and the location of that area or part it goes to.i'll try to exsplain where i have these wires hooked up at now.the reason i think i might of hooked them up wrong is because the engine will start but when i try to shut it down nothing happens (it keeps running).i have the red wire hooked up to the red wire on the engine regulator located on the side of the engine.i have the yellow wire hooked up to the single prong or tab on the solnoid.I have the black wire hooked up to the outside of the engine cover.there was also another wire hooked up there already but i do not know what it leads to.i have the brown wire grounded to part of the frame where the engine is located.i will also try to exsplain how i have the battery cables hooked up along with the starter.the negitive battery cable i have hooked to part of the frame where the engine is.i have the positive cable hooked up at one of the large post on the solnoid.and finally i hooked the wire that comes from the back of the starter to the oposite post of the one i have the positive battery cable hooked to.i don't know if any of these wires are hooked up to the wrong area or part causing the engine not to shut down, but if the wires are right would you know what else might be causing the engine not to shut down.
thank you for reading this long post.

ANSWER: Hello Todd:

It Sounds like you Have Not Connected the Coil/Magnetron Coil Shut Off Wire. Check the White Wire and See if it is Grounded when the Ign Switch is in the Off Position and Not Grounded when in the Run Position. If Yes, then Connect the White Wire to the Coil Shut Off Lug. Reguardless of Where the Shut Off is Located the White Wire Grounds the Coil to Stop it from Firing the Plug. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: john
i don't know where the coil shut off lug is located, but i was told by a machanic that i should not use the white wire because it was for a solnoid shut off somewhere by the carbarator i think he said.the color wires i am working with are red to the regulator black grounded to the side of the engine shroud.this area also has a diode connected  to it it also leads to both coils.i also have a brown wire that is hooked up to the steel frame the engine is enclosed in.there is a orange wire that is hooked up to the battery.also a yellow wire that connects to a small clip on the solnoid.i thought that the black wire i have hooked up at the engine shroud where the the coil diode is hooked at also.i thought this was where the engine  grounded out and stopped it from running

Answer
Hello Again Todd:

The Coil Shut Off Lug is Located on the Coil. There should be a Blade Connector on the Coil that Accepts the Spade Connector from the Ign Cut Off Wire. Color Codes Change with the OEM and Model of Mower/Unit. Send me the Make and Model Numbers Off the Mower/Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
