Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small engine transmission, nuetral, transmission problem

I have an old ATV called a honcho with a kohler 181s engine and a stand alone transmission(it sits behind the motor)I can not get it to go into gear it has forward and reverse but when i pull the lever nothing happens if I pull really hard up it will go into reverse but the second I let go it is back in nuetral. What can I do to fix this? Or what could be the problem

Hi Mike,

I don't have all that much experience with ATV's, but I'll try to give you some direction on this one.  It sounds like the cable attached to the lever, [that you referred to] is at fault here.  When you pull it really hard then the ATV changes gears.  I would check to see if the cable is either too taut or too loose.  You would need to have the spec's for you to check on the proper tightness of this.  Is the lever some form of a clutch?  If so,it sounds like a transmission problem.  I don't have much expertise in this area I have to admit.  An ATV specialty shop would be the best ones to direct you further.
