Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Leaking Tecumseh Carb, sears craftsman, fuel leaks

Question
I have a older (apprx 10 yr) Sears Craftsman snow blower.  Model 536.884810.  The engine is a tecumseh (sears model 143.794053, tecumsem model HS50-67291H)

It ran a little rough and stalled sometimes when going through heavy snow.  It also has a leaking carb.  So I bought a carb kit, installed new gaskets and new main and idle screws.  I did not replace the float screw.  The float moves freely is does not have any fuel in it.  I replaced the spark plug and adjusted both idle and main screws.  It seems to run much better (tonights snow may be the true test).

But the carb still leaks fuel.

After closer look I found a very small pin hole just below the top flange of the carb body about 1/4 inch to the right and 3/4 inch above the idle adjustment screw.  It's so small but it seems to be a perfect circle like it's supposed to be there.  But when the engine runs fuel leaks through it at a pretty good rate (steady drips).  I am inclined to just put a small dab of some sort of sealant over the hole and be done with it.  But I don't want to cover over a hole that may be there on purpose.  Are you familiar with this? Is it a vent hole or something?

Even when I open the fuel shut off valve to allow fuel to run from the tank to the carb (without engine running yet) some fuel leaks from the hole.

Thanks
John

Answer
Dear John,

I experienced a similar problem with a Toro mower [7+ years old] that I have.
Once you shut off the fuel supply, then that should stop any more fuel from leaking.  The carb likely has a seal that has changed it's shape.  If the machine is running properly, then I would not mess around with it too much over this problem.  Best solution is just to shut off the fuel shut-off valve when your finished. Check to make sure that your shut-off valve is working properly.

Also you could try putting engine fuel cleaner additive [Canadian Tire $4.99] in the fuel, if you think the engine is not running efficiently.
