Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): friction disk, friction wheel, wheel assembly

Question
John Deere 524 snow blower – friction disk.  What is the normal procedure for replacing the friction disk (drive disk). Can the shaft be slid to the left enough to remove the old and put a new disk on the right end of the shaft and then reassemble? No manual or parts list.  Lasted 20
years and noticed that it is almost metal to metal.  The drive tension pulley spring broke and while checking things prior to replacing the spring and drive belt -
noticed the condition of the friction disk.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Don:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the 524 Snow Thrower. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Traction Drive Wheel Assembly. You can See How the Friction Wheel is Assembled and Usually you Can Slide the Shaft Enough to Replace the Disc. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
