Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD Snowthrower, oil viscosity, head gasket

Question
QUESTION: Hello Howard,
I have a 5 horse MTD snowblower with a Tecumseh engine. Engine numbers are HSSK50  67324M  (D)  3336B  I have the engine running fine but when I put it into teh sow there is a complete lack of power. I have cleaned carb, changed spark plug and checked vent in gas cap. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Tony

ANSWER: Dear Tony,

Regarding the lack of power problems,  Check to see if air intake is clear or obstructed, see that lubrication is sufficient to engine parts,. By this I mean oil level, oil viscosity, is good. See that the carburetor is properly adjusted. Possibly it needs adjustment or cleaning. Check if exhaust is obstructed, if there is an improper valve lash , loss of compression [worn rings, blown head gasket].

Hopefully this helps.

Howard

QUESTION: Howatrd,
Thanks for the reply, but I checked and am confident that all your suggestions I have already looked at. Could the governor itself be defective or broken? How would you adjust the governer? Is there a website where I can see an internal diagram of the engine? i really do appreciate your help with this one.
Thanks, Tony

Answer
Hi Tony,

The manual I use is Tecumseh Technicians Handbook 3 - 11 HP  4 Cycle L-Head enginesPage 27 + Pg 28 has info on Governor adjustments,
The price is around 15.99 Canadian Dollars.

THE MODEL NUMBER WILL BE FOUND ON:
A. Metal tag or decal attached to unit in the location shown.
B. or Stamped on engine.

I hope this info gets you going.

Howard
