To renew rope or spring. first remove all spring tension from rope. Using a screwdriver pull rope up about one foot.
Wind rope and pulley counterclockwise 3 turns a to remove all tension.
Carefully pry off the plastic spring cover. and remove anchor bolt and spring anchor

Carefully remove spring from housing. Unbolt, and remove rope guide. Note position of the friction link Remove old rope from pulley.
It is not necessary to remove the gear retainer unless pully or gear is damaged and renewal is necessary. Clean and inspect all parts. The friction link should move the gear to both extremes of its travel. If not, renew the linkage assembly.

Install new spring by hooking end of retainer slot and winding until spring is coiled in housing
Insert new rope through the housing and into the pulley. Tie a small knot, heat seal the knot and pull it tight into the recess in pulley. Install pulley assembly in the housing with friction link in pocket of casting Install rope guide. Rotate pulley counterclockwise until rope is fully wound. Hook free end of spring to anchor, install srew and tighten to 75-90 in lbs (8-11 N'm).

Lubricate spring with a small amount of engine oil.

Snap the plastic spring cover in place.

Preload spring by pulling rope up about one foot (305 mm), then winding rope and pulley 2 or 3 turns clockwise.
