Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5/22 Sno-Trac snow blower tecumseh engine, spark plug gap, visible cracks

Question
Hi Howard,

I hope you can help.  We bought a used snow blower and did have it running on a wide open choke though it would stall and sputter. Now pt will not run at all.  I changed the fuel and the spark plug (first), added gas line anti-freeze and stabilizer.  It still will not start.  I thought it was the carburetor but have now checked to see if we have a spark and we do not.  Could it also need a new coil?  Is it electrical?

Thanks, I'm new at this and would really like to get this going before we have another snow storm.

Kim

Answer
Hello Kim,

Okay I will try to get you started with some basic on diagnostics. I understand it can be frustrating [after] buying something and then not having it work.

When you take the spark plug out again check it's condition.
Also check what are the specifications for the spark plug gap? This is important.  You didn't mention a make or model for the engine [different from the model or make of the machine].
Most of the time, generally speaking,  chokes are at the wide open position upon starting, and then in the closed position once you get the machine running. This could be the problem.  You mentioned there is now no spark. Did you check this using a spark tester?  If you did, then I would be checking the quality of the lead wires [to the spark].  Are there any visible cracks or loose connections?  It may be that the coil is  not producing the electricity. I'd first check wiring and connections to the spark.
If you find any more information on the engine and still have problems, get back to me.

I hope this helps you out.

Howard
