Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 23 Snow Thrower Model 536.884810, electrode tip, snow thrower

Question
We recently aquired a Craftsman 23" Snow Thrower Model# 536.884810.  The previous owners said they only used it twice and haven't started it in 2 years, and we can't get it started.  Any advice??  Thanks so much!

Answer
Dear Mellissa,

Re: Craftsman 23" Snowblower Model 536 884810,

1. Make certain that the controls are positioned properly.  The throttle needs to be completely pushed to be open. The key needs to be pointed to start etc.
2.  Ensure that the gas tank is 1/2 full with fresh gas/oil mix at the correct ratio. Check to make sure the gas is reaching the carburetor.  Check the line between the gas tank & the carburetor.
3.  Check the plug wire and ensure it is securely attached to the spark plug.
4. Check that the spark plug condition [see that it is properly gapped] & ground strap make sure they are  functioning correctly.
5.  Check to see if the engine priming device is working correctly.
6.Check the gas cap is venting.
7.  Check the status of the air filter.
8.  You can take a small file and square the side edges of the electrode tip. This really helps w/starting.
9. Check if spark plug is firing.
10.  Check condition of plug wire.
11.  Check the condition of the choke to ensure it is working properly.

I hope you find this information gets the machine going.  If not, follow up with me with the engine serial no.

Regards,

Howard
