Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Exhaust and carby flooded with engine oil, engine oil leaks, piston ring

QUESTION: B&S M0del:92508 engine was running and stopped only to find that the carby and even the exhaust is flooded with the engine oil... removed the piston to check for broken piston ring - no luck.

ANSWER: What is the engine type and code number?  Are the valves wore?
Let me know the rest of the engine numbers so I can look up some information.

These engines are very reliable and rarely does oil get in the carb.  The most common causes for your problem are overfilling with oil, wrong oil weight, or excessive engine angle which usually happens when you turn the mower on it's side.

With today's high parts costs and inexpenssive engine replacement cost it may be cheaper to replace the engine rather than overhauling.  If you really want to keep the mower I would recommend replacing the engine.

You sound like a handy guy so if you are on a budget I would recommend replacing the rings, lower oil seal and sump gasket.  Check/adjust the valves and re-assemble the engine.

I would also recommend replacing the valve breather.  You can clean them but they are so cheap I would replace it to ensure it is working correctly.  A bad valve breather can allow oil to enter the carb and cause engine oil leaks because the engine can not maintain proper vacumm.
