Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs runs great quits after 10-15 minutes, cylinder compression, full tank

Question
QUESTION: Hello John.  Older Briggs on Snowblower.  Runs great 10-15 minutes then sputters and quits under load.  Will run out a full tank of gas with no load.  I can immediately restart with choke.  Oil is fresh and full.  As it sputters I can keep it running by feathering choke.  I have replaced fuel filter(2), carb kit(2), traced and blew out fuel line, emptied and cleaned tank, made sure fuel shutoff is open, new plug.  Muffler does glow red after 10-15 min.  Model 190402, Type 0696-02, Code 7205101.  Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Bill:

The Glowing Muffler is the Key to the Cause. The Only Things that will Cause the Muffler to Glow are, 1- the Flywheel Key Slightly Damaged and is Throwing the Plug Timing Off. 2- The Exhaust Valve is Burnt or in the Process of Burning. Either of these can Cause the Engine to Run for 10-15 Minutes and Quit (since you have checked the other possible causes). The Cylinder Compression Drops the Hotter the Engine Gets and the Damaged Key or Valve Causes the Engine to Run Hotter. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (190402)) and Type Numbers (-0696). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. QUESTION: Hi John!  You are wonderful!!  Took off the flywheel and the key looked OK...Replaced anyway.  The exhaust valve clearance was off so we ground and re-seated it.  We had to dig up our valve grinder and fix that first!  I teach at a school and we have not offered "small engine" in almost 20 years.  I am still waiting for a storm so I can run it under load but it started on the 1st pull.  The max. rpm's seem to be considerably higher than before.  Why would that be?

ANSWER: Hello Again John:

Thanks for the Update. The Unually High Revvs May be from the Governor Needing to be Set. Did you Loosen or Remove the Governor Shaft when you Cleaned and Rebuilt the Carburetor? If Yes, then Reset the Governor. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.** If this is OK, then Check the Governor Spring. Usually the Spring is in the Lower Hole on the Governor Arm. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. QUESTION: Hello again John.  I am afraid I have good news and bad news.  We had 5" of new snow Saturday and I was able to run the snowblower under load.  Good news is that the muffler did not glow red hot since the work on the exhaust valve.  Bad news is that the engine again quit after about 15 min.  I was able to immediately restart without choke this time on one pull and it would run for another 30 seconds to one min.  For review, my experienced friend and I have:

-emptied and cleaned gas tank
-cleaned fuel lines w/compressed air
-carb rebuild kit (2)
-fuel filter (2)
-new plug
-new coil
-ground and reseated exhaust valve to proper clearance
-replaced flywheel key
-checked gas cap for proper venting

We are at a loss....Your help has been so outstanding.  Do you have any other ideas?  I would surely appreciate it.  Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Bill:

WOW Your Luck with this is like Mine with Some to the Units I Work on. LOL. If the Unit is Allowed to Cool for 30 Minutes or More; Does it Run Again for Approximately 15 Minutes and Act Up Again? If Yes, then Place an Inline Spark Tester on the Engine and Operate it Until it Quits. Now Have Someone Watch the Tester while Starting the Engine. The New Coil May be Heating Up and is Bad. I See this a Lot. New Coils Now a Days are a Hit and Miss Deal for Getting a Good One. I have had More and More Trouble over the Past Few Years getting Good Quality Parts for All Equipment I Perform Maintenance and Repairs on. Sorry. They Do Not Make Equipment and Parts as Good as they Used to. Check the Carburetor Bowl for Gas when this Occurs. Check the Compression when this Occurs. Did you Do the Intake Valve when you Reseated and Reset the Exhaust Valve? The Intake May Require the Same Work Performed on it as the Exhaust Valve. Usually the Order of Failure is 1- the Gas Tank Cap (Not Venting and Causing a Vaccum in the Tank) 2- the Coil/Ign Module/Igniter (Heating Up and Stops Firing the Plug/Plugs or Causes a Miss), 3- the Valves (Require Adjusting, Reseating) or 4- the Rings ( Frozen/Stuck and Not Expanding wit the Cylinder as the Engine Heats Up). All of these are Time Sensitive. Usually 10 to 20 Minutes and teh Trouble Occurs. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
