HI Eric: I recently bought a used 1989 Dayton generator. Model#3W232F with a 16HP Briggs&Stratton engine.Model#326437 Type#0782-01.Running engine at 3600RPM to maintain proper output voltage.The exhaust gets cherry red.Please advise me.

I would start by adjusting the high speed jet on the bottom side of the carb and adjusting the idle air mix on the side of the carb.  Sounds like the engine may be running lean.  You an adjust the air/fuel mix by holding the throttle at idle and adjust the mixture.  The high speed can be adjusted at normal running speed.

If richening the fuel mix does not solve the problem, I would check the intake and head gaskets. Last item to check it the valves.  If they adjusted incorrectly the engine may run too hot.
