Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda HS55 snowblower with GX140 engine over revs when chock is off, recommended speeds, compression rings

Question
QUESTION: Hello John, I read one of your answer about engine over revs when not in
chock position is because the Main Jet in the Carburetor is Clogged. My
Honda HS55 snowblower with GX140 has engine over revs problem now
unless it is on Chock position. I have read and search the net in the last few
days, it seems your answer is most helpful, and I will try to clean the main jet
tomorrow. In the same time I would like to know why the main jet clogged
will cause the engine over revs. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello Bing:

If the Main Jet is Clogged, The Engine will Usually Over Rev and then Quit. The Over Rev is Due to the Gas Being Restricted to a Point where it Burns Better and Faster; Causing the High RPMs. An Engine Can Not Run Long when this Occurs Due to the Additives in the Gas that the Compression Rings Use for Lubricant are to Lean to Lubricate the Rings Properly and the Engine Usually Seizes if the Engine Over Revs to Long. A Good Example is a 2 Cycle Engine. You can Set a Carburetor on a 2 Cycle Engine to Rev Well Above the OEM Recommended Speeds. When you Set the Carburetor this way it Leans the Gas to a Point where the Rings are Getting Less Oil and the Engine Seizes. The Same Happens with a 4 Cycle Engine. Has the Governor Arm Been Loosened or Removed from the Engine? Is the Governor Arm Still Tight on the Governor Shaft? Try Resetting the Governor First. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.** You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram and Select the Catalog American Honda. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. QUESTION: Hi John, you are right on the money. The main jet is clogged. I soaked the
main jet and the carburetor and used the pressed air blowed all passages, the
engine will not run high revs anymore. The Honda GX140's governor is
broken. so I will save it for the summer. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Again Bing:

If you Removed the Governor Arm from the Governor Shaft, then the Governor May Simply be Out of Adjustment. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.** If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps.
