Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs and Stratton model 130902 Throttle, briggs and stratton, throttle linkage

Question
Dear John:
I have a Snapper R5000 rototiller with the above engine. The slide throttle has a rod with a spring around it that attaches to the govenor. The spring was broken, and I connected the two halves together. Now when I try to start it, the engine backfires and will not run. I may have either bent the rod or installed it improperly. Can you direct me to a drawing of the throttle linkage? I will get a new spring. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Fred:

The Rod with the Spring Around it is the Throttle Link Rod and the Springs ONLY Purpose is to Keep the Rod Snug when it is Connected to the Carburetor and the Governor Arm. This Should Not Affect the Engine Operation. It Sounds to me like the Point Set Contacts May be Sticking. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Select the Cyl, Piston, Sump File. You can See the Point Set Located Under the Flywheel. Usually the Only Causes for the Backfire is; 1- the Point Set Contacts Sticking. 2- The Carburetor is Not Metering the Gas Correctly. 3- The Valves Require Reseating and the Valve Clearance Adjusted. 4- The Flywheel Key is Damaged. The Most Common is the Point Set, then the Flywheel Key, then the Carburetor and Last the Valves. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
