Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Timing Dimentions & h.p., shaft model, vertical shaft

Question
QUESTION: Hi John:I'm trying to find timing dimensions for a old tecumseh engine.I don't know the H.P.The only information i have is its a vertical shaft Model#143-196042 Serial#9031 16118.Any help would be great. Thanks Steve.

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

Can you Explain "Timing Dimensions", Please. The Valve Timing is Set by Matching the Mark on the Cam and the Mark on the Crankshaft Gear. The Spark Plug Timing is Set by the Flywheel Key. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a Couple of PDF Site Addys that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf. These Sites will Also Cross the Sears Numbers to the Tecumseh Numbers and Give you the HP Rating of this Engine. My Microfiche Do Not hace the 143.100000 Models Listed; Hoever, the Tecumseh Technician I Deal with Says the Engine in the 143.100000 Model is Usually a 3.0 HP or a 3.5 HP Engine. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. QUESTION: Hi John:By timing dimensions i'm refering to thousants of an inch the piston is before TDC.I found some info on timing old tecumseh engines. With cyl head removed, for all small engines(up to the small block 5HP)rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the piston is positioned at .070 BTDC.(Both valves closed-compression stroke)Loosen stater bolts rotate the stater.Just when the points begin to open tighten stater your ignition timing is now set.

Answer
Hello Again Steve:

WOW. You are Talking about a Much Older Machine. The Breakdown Shows this to be a Newer Machine that Uses a Magnetron Coil (Solid State, No Point Set) for Ignition. You Set the Magnetron Coil at .020in from the Flywheel. The Instructions you are Reading are for the Engines with Point Sets and an Adjustable Ign Timing. These were Really Old Engines and I have Not Seen this Type of Tecumseh Engine in 10 to 15 Years. Most All the Engines Use the Magnetron Ign System. The Point Set has been Replaced with the Solid State Ignition that is a Component of the Coil. People were having Problems with the Ignition Timing on the Older Tecumseh Engines and when the Solid State Ignition came Along, All the OEMs Did Away with the Ignition Timing Settings. If you Do have the Older Engine, then the Instructions you Sent me Are Correct for the Ignition Timing Set Procedure. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please.
