Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD 325 reving and over and over, carburetor body, adjustment screws

Question
QUESTION:
I have a JD 325 with the 17hp Kawasaki.  Recently it started rev'ing up and down and won't run under load.  It will run fine at the lowest idle only.  If I move it up even one notch it starts to have the problem.  I can also get it to run with the choke 1/2 on (hard to do without separate choke, but just above full throttle turns the choke on some.)

I've put carb cleaner through it, and put fresh gas in it to no avail.

The "governor" seems to move back and forth as it rev's.

ANSWER: Hello Dave:

The Main Jet in the Carburetor is Clogged.  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float (if Applicable)  and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. You can Also View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.buykawpower.com/kmcb2c/main.jsp and Select View Parts Catalog. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. QUESTION: John,

Somehow my question got posted to you twice.  Not sure how that happened. I rated your response this AM, but didn't ask again.

BTW, as I was trying to load it up on my trailer to take it to a freinds so that I could clean the carb as you suggested it suddenly started working fine!  NO CLUE as to why other than the tilt of getting it on the trailer may have caused something to free up.

Ran it for 3 hours today, no problems.

Answer
Hello Dave:

The Varnish that was Causing the Problem Finally Desolved and Allowed the Carburetor Jet to Start Functioning Properly. I Suggest you Soak and Clean the Carburetor Anyway. The Spray Cleaner Just Loosened the Varnish and Before Long you will have the Revving Problem Again. Then Again you May get Lucky and the Spray Cleaner May have Solved the Problem. As a Small Engine Servce Center Owner and Manager, I Would Still Soak the Carburetor. Thanks for the Good Words and the Ratings. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please.
