Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 116 tractor wont start, john deere lawn tractor, john deere lawn

Question
I have a John Deere lawn tractor model C116L, serial #203383.  The tractor is powered by a Briggs & Stratton two-cylinder engine model #402707, Type 013101, Code 82042612.

I bought the tractor used, and it has always started reluctantly.  When I last used it, I had to shut down in the middle of mowing the yard.  When I tried to restart the engine, I forgot to place the transmission in neutral, and got no starter response.  Put it in neutral; it flooded, and I ran the battery down trying to start it.  Left the tractor out overnight, and it got rained on.   Tried a jump-start; heard a click, but no starter response.  I replaced the battery; heard a click, but no starter response.  I’ve shorted from the battery to the starter, and the starter spins, but will not turn the engine over.  I have 12 volts at the ignition switch, at the starter, and at the solenoid.

What’s up?  Is there a fuse or a breaker somewhere that I popped?

All of your suggestions would be appreciated, and I'm certain, will be extremely helpful.

Brian

Answer
Hello Brian:

Check the Solenoid and Starter. Heres How: Use your Jumper Cable Set and Attach the Positive Lead Onto the Positive Post of the Battery (make sure the Battery is Fully Charged or is a New Battery). Now Firmly Touch the Large Post on the Starter. If the Starter Does Not Turn, then the Starter is Bad. If the Starter Turns the Engine Properly, Then Check the Solenoid. Firmly Touch the Small Post at the Base of the Solenoid that has the Ign Wire Attached to it. If The Starter Does Not Turn and the Solenoid Clicks, Then the Solenoid is Bad. You Also Need to Remove the Starter Drive Cover and Watch the Starter Gear. It Sounds like the Starter Gear is Broken. You Stated the Starter Turns but Does Not Turn the Engine. This Indicates a Bad Starter Gear. It's a Plastic Gear so it is Easy to Damage. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Is the Clicking Coming from the Solenoid? If the Starter is Turning the Engine and the Engine will Not Start and Run, then Check the Blade and Clutch Safety Switchs. These 2 Switchs are Designed Not to Allow the Starter to Engage Unless they are in the Disengaged Position. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
