Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere Tiller, proper model, question thanks

Question
QUESTION: John,
I have a 42# tiller, the serial # on it is mo2901x.
When turn on the pto, the shaft to from the pto to the tiller turns into the gearbox(?), and the shaft that comes out of the side of the gearbox turns, but the connecting shaft is slipping.

Any thoughts on the cause?

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Enter the Model Number 42. Then Select the 42 Hydraulic Tiller. Is this Your Tiller? If Not, then Locate the Proper Model Numbers and Send them to me, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Thanks. However, Is the Shear Bolt Broken that Attaches the Shafts Together? Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks John....let me follow up.

It's actually a 42" tiller.
The serial @ is MO2901X...the other # on the unit is 488185. I can not locate anything that resembles a model #.

I can't see where a sheer bolt would go between the shafts. The one coming out of the box does have a groove in it, but without taking it apart it's hard to tell if something is missing.
Thanks again!

ANSWER: Hello Again Steve:

This Shaft has a Square or Retangle Key About 2 Inches Long that Locks the 2 Shafts Together. The Key Fits Into the Slot in the Shaft and Fits a Slot in the Other Shaft. You will have to Slide the Unit Apart and Replace the Key. Check for a Set Screw in the Shaft that Should Lock the Key and the 2 Shafts Together. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: John...that sounds like the problem...as I know there is a hex inset screw in the shaft that I couldn't figure out purpose of.
Which end should I remove to replace...from the box, or from the tiller?
Do you have any idea of a part #?

Thanks again! You've been a huge help!

Answer
Hi Steve:

I Usually Look a the Bolts that are Going to Have to be Removed and Pick the Side that Looks like it will Give Less Trouble Removing the Bolts. Slide the Unit Apart; Just Enough to Clean the Grooves for the Key Stock and to Make Measurements. Then Insert the New Key Stock and Slide the Unit Back Together. As to the Size of the Key Stock; I Suggest you Measure the Width of the Slot in the Shaft and Purchase that Size. They Used 3 Different Sizes on these Over the Years and I Hesitate to Guess. It can Be 1/8", 1/16" or Possibly 1/4" Key Stock. Purchase a Section of Key Stock 4" Long and the Diameter Required. Cut the Key Stock in Half and Keep the Other for an Emergency. LOL  You will Need it at a Later Time if you Keep and Use the Tiller Much. The Key will Usually Shear and you Need to Check that All the Old Key Stock is Out of the Grooves. Hope this Helps.
