Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starting Problems Tiller, carburetor body, adjustment screws

Question
John:

I have a B&S 4 HP rotor tiller - Serial #D 861387, Model 100202, Type 0015-01, Code 740 30207.

I have a hard time starting this tiller.  The only way I seem to be able to get it started is to pour some gas down the carb and do a lot of pulling on the starting cord.  I may have to add more gas and do more pulling till it will finally start.  Once it starts and is warm it seems to start okay, however once the machine sits for a few hours or a day I will have the same starting problem.

I couldn't find any numbers on the carb. but it is a barrel type with the choke pulling out from the end.  There are two lines running into the gas tank from the carb. one line is longer than the other.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Hello David:

This Carburetor has a Pump. You are Priming the Carburetor Pick Up when you Do the Things you Stated to Start the Engine.  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Replace the Parts (Especially the Pump Diaphragm). Set the Mixture Screw #681 at 1 1/2 Turns from Seat and then Rev the Engine and Make Minor Adjustments if Required to Achieve Full Throttle RPMs. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
