Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine will not start, piston rod, bottom pan

Question
I just replace the piston rod in a B/S engine, model 286707, type 4026, code 92051331. The rod had broke and I removed it without totally disassembling the motor. I took the bottom pan off and the head. I did not disturb the crank and cam alignment, and I did not remove the flywheel. The engine will crank but will backfire through the carb. It is giving me fits, and my yard is starting to look like a jungle. Any advise you can give me?

Answer
Hello Keith:

Replace the Flywheel Key. When the Connecting Rod Broke it Damaged the Flywheel Key and the Plug is Firing Out of Time. The Flywheel Key Times the Plug and the Crankshaft Mark and Cam Mark Time the Valves. You Did Not Disturb the Valve Timing, so this is Not an Issue here. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers (286707-4026). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you have Trouble with the Engine, Not Starting, Running Rough or Not Idling, then you May have to Remove the Piston and Deglaze the Cylinder, so the Rings can Reseat to the Cylinder. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
