Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): johndeere LT180, spark plugs, trouble shooting

Question
I have a JD LT180 w/ a 17HPKawasaki engine and have never had any trouble. Recently while mowing I ran out of gas and now can get it to crank. It turns over, pumps fuel, but will not hit. Both plugs have spark, but can't get to start. Will they spark if the negine is grounded? Hope you can help.

Answer
They will not spark if the ignition system is grounded.  I know this sounds obvious, but did you replace the spark plugs?  Running out of fuel can lean the engine and cause plugs to foul.  Rare, but I would start trouble shooting with new plugs.
Let me know if new plugs fixes the problem.
