Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 10 HP B&S ENGINE, engine model type, crank shaft

Question
QUESTION: Hello and thanks in advance. I have a 10 Hp B&S motor off a generator I am putting on a go cart. I removed the crank shaft because a machine shop is turning it down so it will accept a clutch. this is the first time i have ever gone this far in terms of breaking the motor down. Can you provide me with info or a link on the web so I can make sure I am putting it back together correctly. I am concerned about timing ect...Also I had to remove the float bowl to remove the shroud and there was a coil spring sitting in the bowl, does the spring sit there and get pushed in between three prongs inside the carb body? It looks like it seats itself in there but I have never seen it like that before.
Thanks Again,
John

ANSWER: I have not found a website with a free Briggs manual.  Send me the engine model, type and code number so I can look up the carb.

As for timing, basically line up the crank timing gear mark and the cam mark and it should be fine.  Again, with the engine numbers I can look up info to see if there is anything special with you engine.
Send me the numbers.

QUESTION: Hi, the model is 204412
Type is 0156e2
Code is 040212yd
Hope this helps
Thanks,
John

ANSWER: I looked up the engine and did not find anything special on the timing. You should be able to line up the dots/marks and be fine.

Check the valve clearance...should be .004-.006 for both valves according to the manual.  Rod bolt torque 100 inch pounds. Head bolts 220 inch pounds.  Sump cover bolts 200 inch pounds.
Let me know if this helps.

QUESTION: Thanks allot for the info. Did you have a chance to look into the spring sitting in the float bowl I mentioned?
Also when I install the valve cams does the piston need to be in a specific position?
Thanks
John

Answer
Looking at the IPL it appears the inlet is used to hold the fuel transfer assembly in place.  Will the spring fit inside the inlet needle hole?  Does the inlet needle fit inside the spring and does the inlet needle show any signs of wear where the spring might have rubbed on the needle?
Let me know.
