Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Old Tractor, briggs stratton, flywheel

Question
I used a 15 year-old MTD 14.5 Briggs & Stratton HP rider recently. The engine stopped cold during use and it was obvious no oil was added recently. It had run dry and the engine locked up. Should I just add oil and try to get it to turn over, or is it damaged and better left alone?

Answer
Hello Hank:

99 out of 100 Times when this Happens the Engine is Trashed. You can Add Oil to the Engine and then Try to Free it by Turning the Flywheel Back and Forth Until the Engine Turns Freely. Once the Engine Turns Free, tehn Try to Start it. If the Engine Starts and Runs, then you have Gotten Lucky and the Engine is One of the 1%. Do Not Expect Much from the Engine. Usually the Damage is Major. Replace the Engine. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
