Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stator -vs- regulator, stator, voltage meter

Question
I am going to install a new stator tomorrow b/c my battery is not holding a charge (and it's a new battery).  I spoke to you earlier about this problem.  But, how do I know if it's my stator that is not working properly, or if it's my regulator?  My Kohler model number is CV490, and type number is 27508.  I was told that if I use a voltage meter and set the AC reading to 200...if I am pulling between 35-45 at full throttle, then it is my regulator is not working properly and not my stator.  But if it's below 35-45, then it's my stator.  Is this correct?  What do you suggest?  What is the difference between a stator and regulator?  Thanks again for your help, and I'll be sure to email you back when we fix the issue.

Answer
Hi Again Danny:

The Stator can be Checked this Way, but if the Stator is Giving Voltage and Not Amperage, it will Show Good Voltage and Still Not Charge the Battery. The Voltage Carries the Amps. Most Times with a Regulator in the Charging  System, the Regulator Goes Bad. If the Regulator was Replaced, then the Stator is Bad. The Stator is the Generator/Charger and the Regulator is to Regulate the Amount of Voltage and Amperage the Battry Receives. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
