Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Riding Mower Charging Problem, battery cables, lawn tractor

I have a Craftsman 25 HP lawn tractor that sometimes when you start the mower it will show that it's charging the battery.  It suddenly stops charging it after about 10 or 15 seconds.  If you turn on the headlights the gauge shows it's discharging.  If you start it again it may or may not start charging for a few seconds.

What is the mower model number. xxx.xxxxx, so I can look up your engine information.

Have your disconnected the battery cables and cleaned the battery terminal posts and the cable ends with a wirebrush?  Have you had the battery load tested to see if the battery may be bad?
