Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no spark from new coils, troy bilt lawn tractor, hp briggs

Question
I have been working on a Garden/Troy-Bilt lawn tractor. The owner had put the wrong wire on the starter solenoid and melted two wires in the wiring harness.I replaced both wires, both coils, fuses and ignition switch.I still don't have any spark.I bypassed the safety switches, nothing!Have any ideas? Its a 21 hp Briggs, overhead valve, hydrostatic drive.Oh I did check the flywheel key.Any help would be greatful. Thanks Scott

Answer
Hello Scott:

Jumper a Ground Wire from the Engine Block to the Frame or the Battery Ground. I have had Some Mower with this Problem and the Engine had Lost Ground to the Frame. If the Engine is Grounded Directly to the Engine, then Remove the Coil Shut Off Wire from the Coil and Check for Spark. If the Magnet on the Flywheel is Good and the Coils are Gapped to .015in - .020in from the Flywheel and there is Still No Fire to the Plugs, then the Coils are Bad. I have a Craftsman Mower with the Same Problem in the Shop Now. 3 Coils have been Used on the Mower and All 3 have been Bad Coils and have been Returned to the OEM for Replacement. Quality is Not as Good as it Once was. Do Not be Surprised if the New Coils are Bad. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine and the Mower Model Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
