Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mower dies on incline, carburetor body, adjustment screws

Question
Mower: Ariens 911014
Engine: Tecumseh 5hp
Problem: engine sputters and dies when tilted or up or mowing up slight incline. It starts fine and will run for a long time if not tilted. Water in tank/carb?:I've drained the tank and carb bowl - no luck. I also cleaned out the carb jet.

Any ideas on this?
THANKS.

Answer
Hello Jay:

This Problem is Usually Caused by; 1- the Carburetor Float Level is too Low and there is Not Enough Gas in the Carburetor Bowl when the Engine is on an Incline to Allow the Carburetor Jet to Continue to Supply the Engine with the Proper Gas Flow. To Correct this Situtation;  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. The Float is Set so it is Resting Level with the Bowl Mating Surface when the Carburetor is Turned Over so the Float is On Top.  2- The Gas Flow to the Carburetor from the Tank is Restricted. To Correct this; Clean the Tank and Replace the Fuel Line from the Tank to the Carburetor. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
