Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears tractor, kolher engine, auto part store

Question
QUESTION: I have a Sear 17 Hp lawn tractor with a Kolher engine.  I recently purchased a new battery b/c the old battery wouldn't hold a charge (at least I thought so) even after I charged it over night.  Now I have a new battery and the tractor started fine the first few times.  Now I find myself having to jump start the battery.  I took my battery to a local auto part store and they checked the new battery to make sure it was good, and it was...it just didn't have a charge.  They suggested taking the battery home and charge it over night which I did and took the battery back down to the auto parts store to check the charge.  Now we have 100% charged battery.  I take the battery home and hook it up to the tractor and it starts like a charm.  I have since cut the grass 1 time (for 1 hr) and ran the tractor for a few minutes 2 other times this week, and I find my self having to jump my battery.  I called a local tractor repair shop and they said it is the stator.  Does this sound correct?  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hello Danny:

On Some Kohler Engines there is a Voltage Regulator that Usually Goes Bad. If the Engine Does Not have the Voltage Regulator, then the Stator is Bad. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help.  Here is the  Kohler Model #CV490 and Type number  27508.  If you have anymore suggestions that would be great.  Thanks again.

Answer
Hello Again Danny:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers (CV490S-27508). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Select the Ignition, Electrical File. The Rectifier/Regulator (#8) is Most Likely the Cause for the Battery Not Charging. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
