Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere STX38 hydrostatic transmission, hydrostatic transmission, blown engine

Question
Hello. We have a problem in that the mower has no power to move forward. When its cold, it performs for maybe 2-3 minutes and then won't move.  Reverse is better.  I can get maybe 5 min. in reverse as long as there are no inclines.  My husband turned it upside down, drained the oil, and put in thicker oil.  It is no better.  He was told by the dealer that the hydrostatic is shot and that we need to buy a complete new one at $750.  I shopped around on the internet a bit to try and locate a model with a blown engine that we could buy and take the transmission out of it ... no luck.  Your opinion and any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.  Andrea

Hello Andrea:

Have you Tried this Addy: http://home.att.net/~jnem3/#F%20O%20R%20*%20S%20A%20L%20E ? They have Used Parts and Mower for Sale. Contact Outdoor Distributors @ 1-877-707-2787 and Price a Transaxle from them. From your Description, it Sounds like the Internal Pump has Finally Worn Out. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
