Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Gas edger conks out when I engage the blade, montgomery wards, question pool

Question
Hello. I have an 30 yr old gas edger (Montgomery Wards, 2hp, 109cc) It's been running fine until yesterday. I'd start it and it would run OK untill I'd lower the handle to tighten the pully that turns the blade, I'd hear some screeching sounds I've never heard before, then it will stop after a few seconds. I cleaned the filter and still have the problem. Do I need to clean the carberator? How do I do that if I do? I take the filter off and I see a round opening with a part that slides in and out that's moved by the wire going to the handle. Could it be a loose pully belt problem? Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hello John:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. Check the Belt Idlers and Blade Spindles/Quills/Mandrals for Bad Bearings. The Screeching would Indicate a Bad Idler or Blade Spindle. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
