Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8 hp Briggs Runs Hot and Dies, electronic ignition module, hp briggs

Question
Nathan,

I have a JD 68 rear engine rider.  It runs for a little while (30-45 min.), then dies.  It sounds like its missing, thats when I know to head back to the garage so that I don't have to push it back.  It doesn't really smoke either.  I removed the condensor/points cover and found a lot of THICK dark brown stuff.  Is that stuff evaporating when hot and messing up my spark?  I have been beating my head agaist the wall for 3 years.  I refuse to buy a new motor.  Please help!!

Answer
Hello Kyle:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. Clean the Point Set Cover and Mounting Area. Replace the Point Set Plunger. Is is Warn and the Oil Smoke is Collecting in the Cover. This Form a Film and Causes the Miss. You May have to Replace the Point Set if this is an Ongoing Problem. Have you Looked Into the Electronic Ignition Module that Replaces the Point Set? It Costs About 5 or 6 Dollars (US) More than the Point Set, but you have Less Problems with the Ignition Module. Does the Plug Fire when this Occurs? If Yes, then it's a Fuel Problem. If No, then it's a Point Set Problem. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
