Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 76 gravely 8 hp convertible Koler 181S electrical system, electronic ignition module, koler

Question
QUESTION: John, I don't have any spark either at the points nor at the plug on my 76 gravely 5260 with a koler 181S 8 hp engine. It worked one week and the next nothing I hooked up a new coil and still nothing. I don't know anything about a condenser or what it does, all I can think it condenses the charge but I've not replaced it as of yet. I would like to get your take on it.I just want to cut the grass.

Thanks
Jay

ANSWER: Hello Jay:

Change the Point Set (including Condensor). The Condensor is a Part of the Point Set and is Usually the Cause of No Fire at the Plug. I Usually Suggest Installing the Electronic Ignition Module that is Designed to Replace the Point Set. It Cost a Little More than the Point Set (between $15 - $20us), but you will have Less Problems from the Module than the Point Set. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Again Jay:

Yep the Points Set is the Cause of the No Fire to the Plug of the Point Set. One Good thing is the Point Set is on the Side of the Engine and the Flywheel Does Not have to be Removed to Change them. Install New Point Set with New Condensor and be Sure to Replace the Breaker Rod Also. Rub the Contacts on a Cloth and Polish them. Sometimes a Film will Form on the Contacts and Polishing them with a Cloth will Clean them and Not Damage the Contacts. The Breaker Rod Pushes the Contacts of the Point Set Apart to Make them Function. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers (30718). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Select the 3rd Ignition File (pg73) Listed. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
