Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 8.0 TVM220, blown engine, metal tube

Question
I just replaced an old blown engine on my riding mower with a new Tecumseh 8hp model TVM220. Might have 3-4 hours on it. After running 15-20 mins.(engine hot) it starts surging (leaning out) and within 20-30 secs just sputters and quits. Let cool for 5 mins starts again and same thing in another 10 mins or so. Dealer suggested coil so I replaced that...no help. This is an old JD without seat switch or anything. What to try next?

Answer
Hello Dick:

Check the Pickup Tube in the Tank. Some JD Mowers have a Metal Tube and Screen in the Tank. The Screen Becomes Restricted and this Restricts the Gas Flow to the Carburetor and Causes the Problem you Described. JD Offers a Plastic Replacement Pickup. After the Engine Quits the Gas Back Flows and Flushes the Screen. The Longer it Sets the Better the Screen is Flushed. Once the Engine is Restarted the Screen Starts Clogging Again Until the Engine is Stopped Again. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
