Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Pulley Removal, vanguard ohv, pulley bolt

Question
QUESTION: I'm trying to remove the 16 HP vanguard ohv engine from my countax c600 tractor. I've got the bottom pulley and electric clutch off but can't see how to remove the upper engine pulley, there are no obvious bolts or pins. Any clues please?

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

If the Center Bolt has Been Removed, then the Pulley May Require Heat and Penetrating Oil for Removal. Some of these Pulleys has a Locking Allen in the Shoulder of the Pulley. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Tractor, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply, The model is a countax C500HE s/n 601176540012, the engine is a B&S 28Q777 16 HP single. The pulley is a composite of 2 different dia. wheels with a shaft extension to mount the electric deck clutch on. The center threadded hole is blind. Hope this helps.

Steve.

Answer
Hi Steve:

If the Center Pulley Bolt Holds the PTO Clutch Onto the Engine Shaft, then the Pulley Should Slide Off. If it is Frozen to the Shaft (Rust Usually Causes this), then Apply Plenty of Penetratring Oil and Heat to the Center Tube of the Pulley. It is Rare, but I have had Pulleys that have Required Pullers to Remove Them and Usually when this Happens, the Pulley is Damaged when the Puller is Used. When the Pulley is Re-Connected to the Engine Coat the Crankshaft with "Never Seize" and this will Make Removal of the Pulley Easier in the Future. Hope this Helps.
