Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S inteck hot starting, engine model type, compression stroke

Question
QUESTION: Eric
I have a Briggs model l126602 intech that is about 4 years old and used for personal use.
it has never started hot. I have changed the plug.
Someone said it may be valve lash? if so what should it be?
or is there a compression release on the engine that needs adjusting?
Thank You..........Les

ANSWER: Please re-send the engine model, type and code number.  I can look up the valve clearance with the numbers.

Have you ever checked the head gasket or intake gaskets to see if they may be leaking?
Let me know.

QUESTION: Eric.
Thanks for the reply.
Here is the data for the engine.
Model 126602
Type 0113E1
Code 010328Ea
As far as the intake gasket goes I put a kit in the carb within the last 30 days and I tested all the head bolts for tightness.
It starts on the first pull when cold (4 pushes on the primer)but will not restart after it has warmed up.
Also I set the air gap to .006 on the mag.
Thanks again..............Les
PS which shop manual do you recommend?

Answer
I would recommend the Briggs manual part number 272147.

Both valve clearances should be set to .004-.006 inches.  The compression release is not adjustable.

To check the valve clearnace, rotate the engine to top-dead-center (TDC) on the compression stroke.  Continue rotating the engine 1/4 inch past TDC on the compression stroke and check the clearance.  You can use a WD-40 straw or drinking straw inserted through the spark plug hole to find TDC and 1/4 inch past TDC.

Let me know if this helps.
