Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): valve timing 21hp briggs engine, hp briggs, compression stroke

Question
I replaced push rods on a 21 hp briggs engine model 407777 I am not sure how to properly set the camshaft to crank shaft for proper valve timing. I brought #1 piston up on compression stroke and aligned the marks on the crank and camshaft, however I am not sure the valve timing is correct, can you help ????

Answer
Aligning the timing marks on the crank and cam should set the correct mechanical timing.  I usually rotate the engine several revolutions following the strokes to make sure the timing is correct.  Are you familar with how a 4 cycle engine operates?  What did you set the valve clearance to? What is the enigne type and code number?
Let me know.
