Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1974 Sears Riding Mower, blown head gasket, wheel weights

Question
Hi John, I recently purchased a home, and with it came an old Sears rider, tucked away in a shed under a cover. So I know nothing of its past. It has a 14 HP cast iron Tecumseh engine, and is in great shape, no rust on the deck or anything, complete with snow-blower, blade, wheel weights and chains, so I thought I would see if I could get it to run. I discovered that it had a blown head gasket, and replaced it. I cleaned the carb and away she went. Runs and mows like new, except the engine gets hot. It gets hot even without running the deck, just letting my nephew drive it around the yard for an hour or so. (it heats up faster when  mowing) I pulled the deck off and cleaned/lubed it to try and reduce the work the engine was doing. I've readjusted the overhead valves several times. I cleaned all foreign material i.e. mouse nests, out from under the cooling shields when I had it apart changing the head gasket. What else would cause this to overheat?

Answer
Hello Lawson:

Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have 2 PDF Site Addys that May Assist you Also. They are; 1- http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf and 2- http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf However, the Problem you are Having is Caused by a Restricted Muffler, Improper Valve Setting, Burnt Valve or the Flywheel Key is Slightly Damaged. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
