Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): White smoke smells like burning, select shop, excess oil

Question
QUESTION: I accidentally put too much oil in my lawnmower and had drain it and replace the air filter. It comes on, but it still is blowing white smoke which had no smell before, but now smells like something is burning. I checked the oil level and it is fine now. What more can I do? I don't want to blow the engine.

ANSWER: Hello Wattgirtl:

The Crankcase Vent May have Oil in it and Requires Cleaning. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. I May be Able to Locate an Online Breakdown to Use for Reference. Thanks.

QUESTION: Sorry, it is a Murray Quantum Performance 22" 6.5hp model #223310X199A
ANSWER: Hello Again Wattgirtl:

No Worries. Thanks for the Mower Model Numbers. Go to this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Murray) and Enter the Model Numbers (223310X199A). Then Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View. **I Really Require the Engine Model Numbers to Assist you.** Does the Oil have a Gas Smell to it? Have you Removed the Muffler and Washed it Out or Replaced it? The Muffler is Most Likely where the Burnt Smell is Coming From. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks but no luck with the model number on that site. When I went to Murray.com, they no longer carry info on mowers made 2003 and before (mine is 2003). I did take the muffler off and rinse the excess oil, but there is still some coming out (not alot). My concern is will it harm my mower to let the excess burn out.

Answer
Hi Wattgirtl:

The Engine Model is on the Engine Itself. Now they Use a Sticker. It Should Not Hurt to Let the Excess Oil Burn Out of the Muffler. If After a Few Uses the Engine Continues to Smoke, then the Crankcase Vent will Require Cleaning. I knew the Site Addy I gave you Did Not have the Engine Model Numbers. I Gave you the Site Addy so you Would have a Reference for the Mower (other than the Engine) in Case you Required it Later. I Went to the Site and Located your Mower, Just Not Any Information on the Engine. The Engine Information will be Available Under the OEM of the Engine. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
