Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki FD750D blow by, blown head gasket, bad boy mowers

Question
I have a 2003 AOS6000 Bad Boy zero turn mower with a FD750D Kawasaki. The engine has very good compression but every now and then the engine burns oil and can be seen smoking through the muffler.  It's not necessarily under a load when it smokes and it comes and goes.  It uses about a half quart of oil every 5 to 6 hours of mowing.  I talked with a mechanic at Bad Boy Mowers and he said it sounded like a reed valve.  An other local mechanic said over the phone it needed a ring job.  I know this is very limited information but I would appreciate your opinion.

Thank you,
Tommy Bowman

Answer
This is a bullet proof engine.

This engine likes to find an oil level that it is comfortable with.
Do not add oil until the oil level drops below the add mark. See what happens.

My first guess, with limited info, would be a blown head gasket.
